Ma gandesc ca 12-14 zile sunt indeajuns pt a sta in Palau si nearby si pt a face zona in lung si in lat pe cat de mult posibil. Eu de dus ma duc si singur insa ar fi mai fun in 2 sau mai multi. GEOLOGY, BIOLOGY AND BIO-DIVERSITY

Geology

The Palau Islands are an archipelago composed of about 350 islands and atolls having an area of approximately 160 square miles. Babeldaob is the largest island, having an area of 128.5 square miles. The highest altitude is Mt. Ngerekelechuus in its northwestern part, 794 feet above sea level. Palau can be classified into four types of island: volcanic; reef and atoll; low platform; and high limestone. Several of the islands are a combination of these four basic types. The volcanic islands of Babeldaob, Meyuns, Malakal and Koror make up most of the land area.

All the islands except two small atolls to the north and the islands of Angaur and Peleliu to the southwest are enclosed within the barrier or fringing reef.

Palau's eastern shore drops off steeply to the Palau Trench which reaches a maximum depth of 27,000 feet about 30 miles offshore while the western shore slopes gradually to depths of 18,000 feet about 250 miles to the west.

Marine Bio-Diversity
Palau is located at a cross roads where the enormous Pacific Ocean meets the Philippine Sea, creating one of the worlds' richest zones of tropical marine bio-diversity, making it a truly world-class scuba diving destination that few places on the globe can rival. Palau's marine eco-systems include barrier reefs, fringing reefs, seagrass beds, marine lakes and mangrove forests.

Palau is internationally renown for its' marine bio-diversity which includes over 1,300 species of fish, an abundance of large pelagic animals, and over 700 species of corals. Palau was chosen by National Geographic Society as the first Underwater Wonder of the World and was featured on Discovery Channels �Living Edens� series as one of the world's last living �Edens�. Palau is home to one of the highest number of species not found anywhere else in the world and its marine habitats support a greater density of coral, fish, and other invertebrates than any other place on Earth. Seven of the nine species of giant �Tridacna� clams are found in Palau along with the world's most remote population of Dugongs.

Terrestrial Bio-Diversity
While best known for amazing marine bio-diversity and a reputation as an underwater wonderland for scuba divers and snorkelers, Palau's terrestrial bio-diversity is equally diverse and stunning, making Palau an absolute treasure trove for avid birders and terrestrial naturalists of almost every interest.

Terrestrially, Palau is home to Micronesia's largest resident populations of bird, animal and plant species. The main island of Babeldaob is the second largest landmass in Micronesia (after Guam) and is recognized as one of the largest undisturbed tropical rainforests in Micronesia. Babeldaob is home to Ngardok Lake and Ngermeduu Bay, the largest natural lake and largest estuary in Micronesia , respectively. Palau has over 1,260 species of plants including over 800 that are native.

1) Blue Corner

The best known and most famous dive site in all of Palau, the Blue Corner is a true underwater wilderness which is home to large schools of barracuda and jacks, large numbers of white-tip, black-tip and grey reef sharks, as well as sea turtles, napoleon wrasse, rays, schools of bumphead parrotfish, and literally hundreds of other species visible at any one time.
2) Blue Hole

This dive begins on the top of a shallow reef, descending through one of four large holes into a gigantic submarine cavern. The cavern provides several large exits to the open ocean, starting between 40 and 85 feet below the surface. Inside the twisting tunnels and chimneys that connect this coral fortress to the sea and sky are beautiful soft corals and sea fans. A good place for flashlights to illuminate the colorful walls and ceiling. The holes are very close to the Blue Corner and, when conditions are good, divers can exit the Blue Holes and finish their dive drifting to the corner.

3) German Channel

A man-made channel through the southwest side of the reef leads to a sandy area, that is home to a “cleaning station” where divers can crouch motionless on the sand and watch manta rays and large reef sharks being groomed by cleaner wrasses at a depth of approximately 50 feet. The area is also inhabited by garden eels, barracudas, snappers, leaf fish and octopus. On both sides are coral gardens that features crocodile fish, nudibranchs, anemones and clownfish.
4) Big Drop Off

One of Palau's best places for combining snorkeling and diving. Snorkelers explore the top of the reef in shallow water, looking over the edge of the wall. Divers usually drift slowly along the wall, at depths from 40-80 feet surveying the abundant hard and soft corals, sea fans, and large schools of tropical reef fish.

5) Turtle Cove

A popular site, also good for combining diving and snorkeling. This is a wall dive, usually explored at depths of roughly 60feet/18m, where the larger life, such as sharks, rays, large turtles are found. In the shallower areas are large schools of reef fish, numerous anemones, and sometimes smaller turtles. The sandy flat area between the nearby rock island and the cliff is a good place for a lunch break and snorkeling.
6) Ngedebus Coral Garden

This is a good site for beginner divers, only a short boat ride south of Turtle Cove. It is also a great site for all divers who like hard corals and exotic marine life, including crocodile fish, lion fish, and rays. It is also an excellent place for underwater photography and video, due to the rich coral mounds, gentle underwater conditions, and moderate depths.
7) Ngedebus Wall

Ngedebus Wall is at a corner of Ngedebus coral garden. You can dive the wall to the corner, where you can watch all the underwater action along the reef.
8) New Drop-Off

This is an advanced dive, in 20-120 feet of water, located around the corner from Big Drop-off. There are often lots of currents, bringing schools of large fish, including sharks, along the wall. The wall is also alive with small tropical fish and other creatures. This is a "bottomless" wall, so keep an eye on your depth gauge.

9) Virgin Blue Hole

Starting on the top of the shallow reef, divers descend down the hole, past walls with sea fans and hiding fish, to the depth of 90 feet. There a tunnel exits to the open sea and divers continue along the wall, seeing beautiful soft corals, sea fans, cruising eagle rays, turtles, and on occasion, the rare leopard shark.
10) Ngemelis Wall

Gorgeous soft corals on the wall, seafans and lots of colorful reef fish, especially school of pyramid butterfly fish. Often sea turtles, grey reef sharks, and white tip sharks are cruising the wall.
11) Ngerchong Inside

It offers a gentle slope with diverse corals and wide variety of reef fish, including at times cuttlefish, ghost pipefish, and zebra sharks.
12) Ngerchong Outside

This is a wall dive and home to many large Gorgonian Sea fans, reef fish, and reef sharks.
13) Peleliu Wall

One of the beautiful wall dives. Lots of colorful soft corals, including black corals, and huge sea fans cover the wall. Large numbers of tropical reef fish live here, including pyramid butterfly fish, square anthias, moorish idols, sergeon fish, bumphead parrot fish, trigger fish, and scorpion leaf fish. Larger fish include grey reef sharks, white tip sharks, barracuda, and jacks. On rare occasions, sailfish, marlin, and bull sharks visit this area.
14) Peleliu Cut

Starting from the Peleliu wall, divers follow the current through the Peleliu cut. The top of the Peleliu Cut is about 45 feet depth. We use the reef hook, hooked on the top of the reef, to see grey sharks and white tip shark are cruising around us.

15) Peleliu Corner

This dive starts at the Peleliu Express and goes to the corner, or starts from Peleliu Cut and goes to the corner. The depth is about 75 feet. Divers can see schools of giant travelly, big grouper fish, white tip sharks, schools of baraccuda, napoleon wrasse. This is an extreme advanced dive -- be aware of extreme down currents.
16) Peleliu Express

There can be extremely strong current, or mild current, or no current at all. The wall is home to yellow soft corals, small reef fishes, and possibly schools of the sharks like grey reef shark. The strong current attract sharks, barracuda, tuna, and rays. Huge giant travelly fish, groupers, drift off the wall to the blue ocean. During our safety stop, divers can possibly see blue marlin, a school of rainbow runners, sailfish, or a whale shark.
17) Yellow wall

Peleliu East dive site. Divers drift along the wall to see the tiny soft yellow corals covering the wall. There are also giant sea fans on the wall, grey reef sharks, sometimes eagle rays, schools of barracuda, and rarely, blue marlin.

18) Stingray Point

East of Peleliu, this is a vertical wall and drop off. At the depth of 15 feet, on top of the reef, there is sandy area where we can see sleeping sting rays, dragon wrasses, and reef fish. Along the wall there are colorful sea fans. Rarely can be seen Blue Marlin.
19) Orange Coral Garden

This has a sloping wall with lots of beautiful soft corals, table corals, hard corals, Giant moray eels, schools of barracuda, jacks, buffaro fish, and white tip sharks. You can find WWII relics under the water, such as a ship anchor, chain, bombs and bullet shells.
20) Orange wall

This is a vertical wall where divers can see the big sea fans, and anemones with many anemone fish. Schools of black snapper, sea turtles, grey reef sharks and white tip sharks are cruising along the wall.
21) Godwin Point

Starting from the wall dive, we see lots of sea fans on the wall and schools of butterfly fish. Crusing around the wall, heading up to the slope area, we put the reef hook on the top of the reef and watch fish swim by; or continue the drift dive along the top of the wall. There are many colorful soft corals, giant clams, schools of black snapper and barracuda.

22) Dolphin Bay

Start from the white beach, all the way to the Ngedbus reef, on the west side of Peleliu. You can possibility to see the school of spinner dolphins that lives here. They enjoy riding the bow wake of the boat, so when driving the boat, they are jumping and spinning, and cruising alongside the boat together.

23) Jellyfish Lake

Jellyfish Lake is a famous marine lake located deep in a Rock Island. It is home to millions of stingless jellyfish who pulse slowly across the water each day following the sun. The jellyfish have developed a symbiotic relationship with algae that they carry, tend, and live on. Thus they follow the sunlight to keep their algae healthy. Our boat will take you to the dock at Jellyfish Lake. From there you will hike on a path up a steep hill, then down through the jungle to the dock at the lake. To find the jellyfish, snorkel out into the lake, into the sun. The jellyfish are extremely delicate; take great care when swimming through them.

Is there a market in town?
Yes, Surangel and Ben Franklin are full service grocery and dry goods markets. The
selection of goods is not extensive, but almost everything is available.


Can I drink the tap water?
It is recommended that you purchase bottled water. Tap water is OK for brushing teeth
and bathing.


What is the voltage?
In town the electricity is 110V 60 cycles. American standard style plugs. At Fish N Fins
we offer both 110 and 220 for charging batteries.


What type of food is served in the hotel/restaurants?
There are many types of food available in town and in the hotels. Most common is
Asian style and American style. All restaurants are safe to eat in.


Do you have restaurant nearby?
Barracuda Bar & Restaurant is located in our shop and serves breakfast, lunch &

What currency is used on Palau?
The U.S. Dollar. The exchange rate for Traveler's Checks and currency is the same.

How do I get to Palau?
There are several ways to get there depending where you are coming from. There are many
routes of travel; it is best to check with your professional travel agent. The suggestions I give
you here are subject to change.

From Europe:
China Air serves Frankfurt and flies non-stop to Taipei, from Taipei it is a 3-hour flight to
Palau. Far Eastern Air from Taipei to Palau only operates on Tuesday and Saturday.


From the USA:
Continental Airlines from Los Angeles to Guam via Honolulu. From Guam there is daily
service to Palau. Continental Airlines and Northwest fly from several U.S. mainland cities to
Tokyo. From Tokyo, Continental or Northwest to Guam and Continental to Palau.


From Japan:
JAL charter flights, Continental Airlines or Northwest from Tokyo to Guam and Continental
daily to Palau.


From the Philippines:
Continental Airlines serves Palau 2 days a week, Wednesday and Friday.

How do I get to my hotel from the airport?
Most hotels on Palau provide transfer service for a small fee. When you book your dive
and hotel through Fish N Fins we will tell you if the airport transfer is included. Taxi
service is plentiful. The standard cost to and from the hotel/ airport is $20.00 each way.


Will I need to guarantee my hotel?
Yes, to confirm your hotel we will need your credit card number and expiration date. We
also require 25% deposits upon confirmation of the booking.


Where is Fish N Fins located?
We are at the M-dock in Koror, the main town in Palau.

What kind of valves available?
There are DIN and international valves available. We have adaptors available for rent


When is the best season to come to Palau?
Palau has two main seasons: the dry season, January to June, is considered a better
season for diving and the rainy season, July to December, is considered less attractive
because the seas might get rough. Palau is very close to the Equator and in the tropics;
the weather doesn't always follow the book as much as nature. Even when the weather is
"bad", the diving is still very good as there are many alternatives in such a huge
selection: inside the lagoon, caves, and sheltered dive sites.



Where do we usually dive?
There are more than 75 known dive sites in Palau. Every itinerary is based on the tides
and weather but we more frequently dive the following dive sites: Helmet Wreck, Soft
Coral Arch, German Channel, Ngemelis wall, Big Drop Off, New Drop Off, Blue Corner,
Blue Holes, Turtle Wall, Fairyland, Virgin Blue Holes, Turtle Cove, Ngedebus, Mathew's
Place, Barnum Wall, Ngerchong, Wonder Channel, Jelly Fish Lake, Giant Clam City,
Ulong channel, Siaes Corner, Siaes Tunnel, Shark City, Peleliu(4-5 sites), Chandalier

What types of tanks are available?
We have 63, 80 (our standard) and 100 cu.ft. aluminum tanks. All our tanks are pumped
to their maximum working capacity.


Do you have Nitrox?
Yes, we can provide 32% Free of charge), 36% and 40% mixtures. Prices vary with the
enrichment. The air quality is analyzed at set intervals and complies with the
Compressed Breathing Air Specifications. We also offer up to 100% O2, sofnolime for
rebreather, deco gas etc


Do you offer technical diving/rebreather ?
Yes, we offer technical diving and rebreather and we have a trained staff that handles
this.


Do you have rental equipment?
Yes, we rent Aqua Lung and Sea Quest dive gear. The following prices are in effect:
Full set: BCD, Regulator, Fins, Mask and Snorkel, wetsuit $45.00 per person per day.




What type of dive boats does Fish N Fins use?
The dive boats are Yamaha open boats with bimini tops for sunshade. This type of dive
boat is used throughout the islands.


If my equipment breaks, can I get it repaired?
Yes, we have a workshop with certified repair technicians on staff.


Can I leave my dive gear at Fish N Fins between dives?
Yes, we have a large, well-ventilated gear room. The gear room is locked at night and we
have a security guard on duty to protect the store and your dive gear.


How many divers can I expect to share the dive boat?
Depending on the size of the boat we take from 8, 10 or 12 divers. We have a new and
comfortable boat that takes up to 15 divers


Are there gear rinsing facilities and/or showers available for use after diving?
Yes, we have three large fresh water rinse tanks that are along the dock for your
convenience. One tank is dedicated for camera use only. We also have a hot shower
available on the dock area as well as toilet facilities.


What is the best time of year to dive Palau?
The weather is typically the same year around. Average air temperature varies only a few
degrees plus or minus 32oC (86oF) and water temperature averages 29oC (84oF) all
year. The reefs that surround Palau and inner lagoons allow us to schedule diving
throughout the year.


Are there any additional costs associated with the dive packages?
There are special taxes levied by the various states. The collected fees go to
conservation of the islands. The Koror State Rock Island Permit is $35.00 for 10 days.
The Peleliu State Dive Permit is $25.00 for 14 days. The dive tax for the island of Anguar
is $75.00.


If I do not dive are there any other activities I can do?
If it is water sports, we have ocean kayaks and snorkeling. We offer full day kayaking
trips that include lunch, drinks and guide from $95.00/pp. We also offer different kind of
tours. Snorkeling usually includes going out with the divers in the morning and returning
with them, lunch and drinks are provided for $105.00/pp. land tour to Big Island,
Babeldaob: visit melekeok, waterfalls, crocodile farms and many more. We offer from


$105 pp for full day trip. There are also land trips to traditional Palauan sites, an
aquarium and a dolphin center. Fishing upon request. We can assist you with these
activities.


How do I get to the dive shop?
Fish N Fins will pick you up at your hotel at 8:00 am. If you like to have breakfast at our
Barracuda restaurant, we can pick you up earlier. The boats leave the dock starting at


8:30 am and return between 3:30 and 4:00. We will return you to your hotel when you are
ready.
What type of wet suit should I wear?
3mm is fine; the water here is warm enough for a skin or T-shirt.


Do you offer underwater camera/video rentals and services?
Yes, we have a photo shop that run by a photo pro and a wide range of rentals. We can

MORE INFO……

The great thing about Palau is that we are located on Latitude N07.30 so we DO NOT have any
Monsoon season or Typhoon season. WE DIVE ALL YEAR ROUND.
In the old times (And as many books may still say) we have had a DRY Season (October- June)
and a WET season (July- September). Due to global changes in the last 25 years we now have a
very random weather pattern. Most of the time the weather is beautiful and the sky is blue with
occasional showers, which help to keep the rock islands’ vegetation green.
Visibility is generally excellent.


VISIBILITY:

Visibility depends on tide cycle. When it is out-going tide, visibility drops and when it is in-coming
tide visibility improves. This cycle happens 4 times a day (24 hours period)

1. In-coming tide for six hours and High tide slack water at the end of it (With best visibility of the
day)
2. Out-going tide for 6 hours with Low tide slack at the end (With worst visibility of the day)
3. Next In-coming tide for six hours and High tide slack water at the end of it (With best visibility
of the night)
4. Next Out-going tide for 6 hours with Low tide slack at the end (With worst visibility of the night)
Because this cycle depends on the moon, the times of the cycle change EVERY DAY by
approximately 1 (One) hour so If today slack High tide was at 08:00 AM, tomorrow the same
slack high tide will be an hour later at 09:00AM! The WHOLE CYCLE moves 1-hour forward
everyday!!!
Half of this cycle happens at night when we don’t dive so in general there is one high tide and one
low tide in a 12-hour cycle of daylight.
Visitors can expect to see all creatures all year round.

MARINE LIFE

There are certain events and phenomenon that happen in Palau during certain times of the year:

A. December / January/ February is the Manta season when we see more Mantas than usual
(Reasons unknown!)
B. February/March/April/May- Huge numbers of sharks come from all over to mate. These
activities depend on water temperature and other unknown factors so the pick of this event varies
every year within this time frame.
C. August/September - Big schools of juvenile sharks after birth (size is 8"-16") are often seen.
There can be as many as 100 in a school. Mostly seen in Ngerchong outside, Turtle wall, German
Channel and Short Drop Off.
D. June/July- Best visibility inside the lagoon (Again, sorry but unknown reasons why this time
frame). Conditions are ideal for Wreck diving in Palau (That is why we schedule our yearly
Wrexpedition event when we do a week of wreck diving for June every year).
SEA CONDITION

This is the main factor that dictates our ability to conduct diving/snorkeling/Rock island tours or
Kayaking.
When the wind picks up (very often not related to rain or clouds) the ocean builds up in a short
time and waves and choppy seas do not allow us to visit some sites.
If it is an easterly wind then the dive sites on the west are protected and can be dived.
When the strong wind shift to the west and the westerly dive sites cannot be visited we dive the
eastern reefs of Palau.
In the center of the Palau’s archipelago is a big lagoon that is well protected by the rock islands
and allows us to do all activities even in the worst weather conditions.


THE GOOD NEWS is that Palau is very rarely hit by bad weather and normally it last only a few
days before weather improves!


I hope this brief summary will help to explain the weather and marine life patterns in Palau. Some
of it is based on scientific data (Tides), the rest is our own logged data with more than 20 years of
experience and observation and more than 100,000 dives in Palau among our staff.

interesanta excursie...te cazezi intr-un resort sau liveboard?

Cu toate ca sunt fan liveaboard in Palau voi sta pe mal. Cu banii pe care i-as da pe o saptamana pe barca stau 3 pe mal plus ca toate locurile de scufundari sunt accesibile si celor care stau pe mal.
